Twas the AKOP Night Before Christmas

AKOP-AKOPXmasNight2

“Three Holiday things, one Christopher Walken: Welcome to Twas the AKOP Night Before Christmas!”

Happy Holidays to all, and to all GET PUMPED!!!!!! BRO! Soooooooo welcome to another installment of AKOP Nights wherein this episode we tackle not three holiday movies but two TV specials and one movie. We are doing things differently and why not it’s the holidays. So if you are new to AKOP Nights, here is the drill: Earl, Shawn and Patrick all pick a movie, or TV show in this case, and they have to watch all three. When each show is done they discuss the selection for your listening enjoyment. And in keeping with the Chris titling, we have a very special guest: “Christopher Walken”!

What are the three picks you ask: Well don’t let anyone know we told you but: Earl choose the recently released TV special Black Mirror/White Christmas. Patrick dove back into his childhood and picked The Muppet Family Christmas, and finally Shawn picked, of course, a Christmas horror movie in the form of Black Christmas.

Get that eggnog and shove some tinsel in your mouth because we are ready for the holidays…are you?

Let it begin…the night now.

*SPOILER WARNING: We spoil the hell out of these shows and we have to ask: If you haven’t seen either Black Mirror/White Christmas, The Muppet Family Christmas or Black Christmas then have some fun this holiday season, watch these shows, and then come back and listen to the show.

Late Night Tales

Kanye West, James Franco, and Bound 2

Screen Shot 2013-11-27 at 2.04.17 PM

If you’ve been checking out the internet the past few weeks, you’ve likely seen either Kanye West’s Bound 2 music video or James Franco & Seth Rogen’s parody version. Well, one can’t help but put two cents into the cultural conversation! Earl brings over Patrick Barfoot for some drinks at the pub, while chatting about these two eccentric creatives and their respective videos. They analyse whether one or both have any artistic merit, if their creators are as honest about their intentions as we’re led to believe, and what this video says about art and culture today. Yes, all this from a video involving tastefully silhouetted bodies gyrating on a motorcycle in front of a green screen. Call them crazy, but it made for one hell of a conversation topic! So get on your bike and come on over to listen to the episode! (Recorded live at a local pub during a Leafs game, so expect ambient noise.)

Guests:
Patrick Barfoot (@patrickbarfoot) – Editor and Director, patrickbarfoot.com

Supplementary notes:
Bound 2 and Bound 3: Side by Side

Audio notes: (45min. runtime)
0:02:15 – Bound 2, megalomania, Kanye’s comment on his video, and looking artificial
0:08:35 – Music videos, illusion of film, celebrity, celebration, and Kanye’s earnestness
0:14:55 – James Franco, comparing videos, parody & irony, self-awareness, and authenticity
0:23:10 – Comedy, aesthetics, being an asshole, and viral marketing
0:28:00 – Being stupid, artistry, modern art, and shifting one’s creative medium
0:34:30 – Franco and Kanye’s respective outputs, “artist on celebrity”, and fringe vs. populist tastes
0:40:50 – Intent vs. execution, explaining one’s art, underlying motives, and originality vs. reflection in craft

Daft Punk / Justice

daftpunkjustice

It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here… a new episode of All Kinds of Philler! Oh, and also Random Access Memories, the new record from Daft Punk! Have they lost their “Touch” or are they still “Doin’ It Right”? Rest assured, the puns will be in full force when Earl brings in fellow electro fan Brent to discuss the album track-by-track, as well as their thoughts on another dynamic duo: Justice. They also end up talking about their first memories of both bands, their discographies, and what is it about the water in France that causes people to make crazy electronic music.
