Gravity

AKOP_Covers_Gravity

On this episode, we weigh in on the film Gravity, which exploded after its screening at TIFF this year! Earl pulls in Parker Mott to discuss why they’re more reserved in doling out praise for the lauded film, why it’s hard to recommend any movie with a well-oiled hype machine, and what they liked and didn’t like about it. Plus, Earl suggests a possible sequel idea, and Parker recommends another film for those repelled by Gravity’s charms.

Breaking Bad

AKOP-Covers_BreakingBad2

Everyone’s coming down from their collective high now that Breaking Bad is over, which is the right time to start deconstructing the show in one episode! While dealing with coughing fits, Earl blackmails Parker Mott to partner up with him and delve into the finale as well as the whole series. They discuss its structure, visual style, pacing, and whether or not it stayed true to its original mantra. And much like its protagonists, they get off-track by comparing it to Lost and The Wire, and do impressions of bros watching the show. Jump aboard the RV and have a listen! (Spoilers for the whole series.)

TIFF 2013 – Post-Festival

AKOP-Covers_TIFFpt3

With over 300 films and only eleven days, you’d think there’d be no time for All Kinds of Philler! This is the final episode of our coverage on the Toronto International Film Festival. Earl brings in Parker Mott again to reflect on the festival as a whole, as well as discuss Enemy, Mystery Road, Why Don’t You Play in Hell?, and 12 Years a Slave. They also compare their overall festival impressions, all the while fighting exhaustion and the lull after the thrill of watching films for eleven days.  (Note: Recorded at a semi-open restaurant, but background noise was kept as minimal as possible.)

AKOP-Covers_TIFFpt1

With over 300 films and only eleven days, you’d think there’d be no time for All Kinds of Philler! This is the first of what’s planned as a series of short episodes on the Toronto International Film Festival. Earl manages to get together with Parker Mott while lining up for one of the events, talking about their festival experiences so far. Patrick Barfoot joins them partway to offer up what he’s looking forward to. They talk about some of the most-buzzed about films like Blue is the Warmest Color, 12 Years a Slave, and Palo Alto, as well as smaller fare like Unbeatable, Mystery Road, and Night Moves. They also recommend some choices if you plan to catch a movie at the last minute, or in theatres in the next few months. (Note: Recorded at a crowded line-up, but background noise was kept as minimal as possible.)
